The identification with this child of another race and experience begins at once, at the most thrilling moment, for the story is not told in the order that it might well have been in a first-person narrative, that is, from the beginning. And I think the moment you start asking yourself those kind of practical, real-world questions the flying carpet becomes believable. We read, for example, that "oikeastaan epäjärjestys johtuu Uri-koirasta (joka haukkaa milloin kenenkin jalkaa) ja niistä, joita sanotaan henkilöiksi" ["actually, the confusion is caused by the dog Uri (who chews indiscriminately at people's feet) and by the so-called characters."] Here, the narrator has no insight into the characters' minds but is merely reporting the situation.

Those are just a few of the elements I found in the book, and I found all the magical realism very interesting. It is precisely in these processes that Shelley succeeded. I'd add some African writers, too (in particular Nigerian Amos Tutuola), and possibly some Asian writers. The time shifts are further highlighted when Allende uses digression to reveal how ‘Nicolas later used to treat rheumatism and other miner pains’ (Pg 188) ‘that was all much later’ (Pg 188).

What books using this style do you recommend? I had to read "Men of Maize" by Miguel ngel Asturias when I was in school. The characters are aware of the strange qualities that they possess and are indifferent or ‘used to’ the unnatural powers of the co characters. The capacity to foster intense emotional responses in the reader, which I’ll call awe, through an uncanny, near-magical depth of understanding of the human condition demonstrated by monumental metaphor, or through the ability to reverse the roles of the fantastic and mundane, to create the possibility, however slight and by whatever means, that the fantastic is real, and the real fantastical.
