Rappaccini treats the plants as though they were dangerous creatures, but his lovely daughter Beatrice seems perfectly at ease with them. Wright used the same concept in reverse for Goodlow’s Ghosts (1993), in which a murdered man’s spirit returns to solve the mystery of his own death.
