With the start of the Korean War on June 25 1950 two formidable opponents were to meet in the skies of North Korea in an area that was given the name “MiG Alley”: the F-86 Sabre and the MiG-15 Fagot. IX Corps was tipped off about an impending attack in the White Horse area when a Chinese Officer had surrendered to the ROKs in the area of Observation Post 'Roger', which was located on Hill 284, a small hill mass on the right of White Horse, and which overlooked a portion of the Chorwon Valley.

My birth place Kapsan is completely destroyed by the special request by MacArthur and Rhee - Kapsan was the guerrilla base of Kim Il Sung during 1932-1941. Sea Furies from the HMAS Sydney were in the air and were sent to provide cover because the downed aircraft was well inside enemy territory. But at the same time, defense officials said they were prepared to strike again, should the Houthis threaten American—or even commercial—ships in the region’s waters.

Between July 16 and 31, the ship’s planes burned more avgas (252,135 gallons)11 than the ship carried (231,650 gallons).12 Although the number of hours flown by the jets was less than 20 percent of that flown by the propeller-driven aircraft on board, the Panthers burned almost half the avgas consumed during the entire cruise.13 By September, as the tempo of Valley Forge’s air operations increased, her jets were averaging thirty-six sorties a day, and the consumption of aviation fuel increased accordingly, reaching approximately 30,000 gallons a day.14 This necessitated taking on of some 100,000 gallons every three or four days from one of the three oilers assigned to the fueling group that was now dedicated to the task of keeping the Valley Forge and her escorts loaded with fuel.

Personnel from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), and the Australian Regular Army (ARA) were committed soon after the war began and would serve for the next three years in the defence of South Korea.
